2nd Global Bird Watchers Conference 2012

On January 19-22, 2012, the 2nd Global Bird Watchers Conference was held in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India, by the Tourism Department of the State Government of Gujarat, India and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry. About 100 foreign delegates from almost 40 countries and some 300 local Indian delegates attended the international gathering of birders, birdwatchers, bird photographers, ornitologists, travel writers, bloggers, tour operators, bird conservationists and nature lovers. The Philippines was represented by Alain Pascua and Rey Sta Ana of Wild Bird Photography Philippines, Anna Gonzales and Mike Lu of Wild Bird Club of the Philippines, and Mark Jason Villa of Rhabdornis Tours. Special thanks to Mr. Uttej Rao of JN Rao Travel Organization for considering a big delegation from the Philippines, for facilitating air travel arrangements and for his continuous support and help that made our participation very meaningful.

  • After our two-day field trip, we went back to the city. We were housed at The Fern, a newly-built ecotel hotel in Ahmedabad.
  • The next day is the Conference proper which started with the inauguration of the Photo Gallery at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar. The gallery features bird photos, paintings and sand murals.

  • I once again met Mr. Bhasmang Mehta, a fellow delegate during the 1st GBWC in 2010. My friend proudly showed his bird photos which were featured in the gallery.

  • Conference proper: Plenary Session III - Photographing and Documenting Birds, with Mr. Saleel Tambe, Wildlife Photographer from UK; Mr. Sudhir Shivaram, Wildlife Photographer from Bangalore, India, discussing "The Art and Science of Bird Photography;"  Mr. Bhaskar Krishnamurthy from USA, Dewworks Director; and Ms. Avi Sabavala, FCCI President as panel chair.
  • Conference proper: Plenary Session I - Experience Sharing of Field Trips, with Dr. David Harper of UK University of Leicester; Ms. Dawn DevVecchio, Travel Writer; Dr. Bharat Jethva, Wetlands International South Asia Director; and Mr. Krister Castren, Honorary Consul of Finland to Lithuania as presiding chair.
  • Conference proper: Plenary Session II - Avi Tourism, with Mr. Duncan Pritchard of South Africa, "Birding as a Tourism Opportunity;" Ms. Surekha Aitabathula, News Editor of Doordarshan, Andhra Pradesh, "Experience as a Birdwatcher - A Passion that Equals meditation;" Mr. Shyam Parekh, DNA Resident Editor; and Dr. Ted Floyd, Editor of Birding Magazine of American Birding Association, "Global Birdwatching in the 21st Century." I met Ted during the 1st GBWC in 2010.

  • After the conference, we still have one day left, so we went to Pariej, a village in the mandal of Bharuch, Bharuch, Gujarat, India. Thanks to Mr. Utpal Rao of JN Rao Tours who arranged our transportation.
