Coastal Lagoon Critical Habitat
The Coastal Lagoon Critical Habitat harbors a diverse species of birds both migratory and residents. At least 5,000 heads of birds were counted in 2004. Most significant is the presence in the area of at least 1% of the population of Greenshank and 10% of the population of Black-winged Stilt within the East Asian – Australasian Flyway. To date, the DENR has recorded 52 species of birds in the Coastal Lagoon Critical Habitat while the Wild Bird Club of the Philippines has recorded more than 100 also in the same area. Official records show the presence of the Philippine Duck, a vulnerable endemic species, and Chinese Egret, a global endangered species. The Coastal Lagoon Critical Habitat is an attraction to bird enthusiasts both local and foreign. This makes the area a suitable ecotourism site. The Coastal Lagoon Critical Habitat is the only area of such ecological integrity within an urban setting in the country. It is the first Critical Habitat established in the country. The Las Piñas–Parañaque Critical Habitat and Ecotourism Area is just a small portion of Manila Bay but its significance transcends beyond the locality.
